The Podgineer – Episode 009: 06.02.2009
Hosted by Mike Harper & Mike Wisland

---- Show Outline ----

Show Sponsor: Jackson Hole Soda Co. Visit http://www.palisadebrewery.com/products.htm for some refreshingly unique soda sure to please the taste buds!

Show Notes: As stated in the episode 008, we're in transition! The Podgineer will begin to transform beginning with this episode as we post shorter episodes and use original segments in each episode as they're recorded. We're mixing it up to make each episode easier to digest and much more ,

[ 00:00:53] - 0 to 60 in the News: Commentary on Zune.net

Well, Zune.net has been around for some time now but with recent updates to the site, Zune.net now has a Web-based directory if you haven't noticed. After over a month of testing and getting to know its quirks I've come away with mixed feelings about how Microsoft integrates its products. Honestly, Zune.net and the Zune Software are two separate experiences altogether. Littled to no integration between the two leaving me to scratch my head. For example, no integration has been done to ensure that a podcast feed found in the desktop aggregator is also found in the Web directory. What's worse, if a podcaster has submitted their RSS feed in the Zune Software/Marketplace, they must submit it once again if they want to appear in the Web directory! What were they thinking?

Over all, the experience is decent. Microsoft has done what Apple has not done and brought the directory out away from the desktop software. With the announcements at E3 concerning the Zune HD and xBox integration, it'll be interesting to see where Microsoft actually integrates the systems. Will they do it properly - time will tell -

[ 00:03:03] - Pit Pass: The New H4n

Samson Technologies continues to refine the H-Series of handycorders with the recent update to the venerable H4. The H4n bring a slew of nice refinements that are sure to please present owners who decide to upgrade. Mike Wisland quickly reviews some of the refinements that are apparent once the device in unpackaged and turned on. From the much improved interface, redesigned mic placements, to the bug we found while on assignment in search of a some serious auto foley - this device has many welcome improvements over the original H4. Taste buds wet - more to come on this handy device in the near future.

The Show Room: The Moth

(+) Rating [Sensorial Design]

Tired of the same old stories? Even get the itch for a real-life adventure into the unknown but not sure where to find it? Well, look no further than The Moth! We want your feedback - call 888-763-4671 (podgnr1).

Now that we’ve had several months to test out ideas for the show format we’re reviewing and considering numerous changes. We look to you our listeners for ideas on how we can better serve the community.

[ 00:01:17] - 0 to 60 in the News: Zune in Crisis

With the latest Q-10 results in from Microsoft the 2008 holiday season turned out to be a revelation as the technology giant seeks to limit the bleeding and save the much vaunted device from the death knell. Will the Zune survive? Will Microsoft pull a rabbit out of hits hat and offer an iPod Touch like device that truly bring a unique experience to the consumer? Only time will tell but for now, go to the PCTU blogs and have your say on where this device is headed.

[ 00:01:50] - Under the Hood: Channel vs. Item Tags in RSS Feeds - what’s the difference?

Even for many podcast veterans understanding the difference and persuasiveness between the
and
tags is often misunderstood and underutilized. CEO Michael Harper quickly distinguishes the differences between the two tags and their unique use in a podcast. Understand the difference to better attract, inform, and retain subscribers!

[ 00:02:08] - 0 to 60 in the News: MXP4 Experience Platform

MXP4 (Multiplied Experience Platform in 4D) offers a glimpse at future applications in interactive audio spaces. The emerging technology offers the following unique advantages to interactive spaces.

DIMENSION: Enables greater expression, exploration and range in the artist’s compositions and arrangements.

DEPTH: Brings interactive multimedia content to musical songs and albums, giving the listener more insight, background and context on the artist, band or tour.

DISCOVERY: Allows musicians and bands to surprise and engage the listener with many variations and unconventional versions of their musical scores, songs and albums.

DIVERSITY: Broadens the appeal and adaptability of music by allowing listener to select from many versions (or “skins”) of a single song to fit their mood, moment or mindset.

Does this new platform have applications in podcasting? Who knows, but it certainly is exciting to see potential applications for podcasting. For more information on the MXP4 format, visit http://www.mxp4.com/

[ 00:03:10] - Under the Hood: Why Experiences Matter

Podcast Tuneup CEO Michael Harper explains the importance and process of creating podcast experiences. Concepts shared in this segment have been taken from “The Podgineer’s Guide to Professional Podcast Experiences.”

This last September marked the 1st anniversary in response to those questions.

[00:01:03] - 0 to 60 in the News: Microsoft happy with #2

Is Microsoft really content with being #2 in the mobile business industry? With Redmond and Blackberry showing signs of moving to increased media capabilities in the enterprise, will these giants in the industry move closer to bringing the the capabilities of t of the iPhone to the market? Will they embrace downloadable media and the podcast space? Time will tell -

[00:01:42] - Under the Hood: Podscrolls

One of the best ways to convey information to an interested party often means selecting the simplest form of media. What happens when you’re in a cab running on the way to the airport and a business opportunity arises? With little space and a small window of opportunity to share information, a visual aid is needed to clarify your product’s strengths and potentially make a sale. Whip out a laptop? No way! An iPod Touch and a simple podscroll will do. Podscrolls are simply a sequence of images viewed in a predetermined order. They’re just what is needed to make a quick presentation without pulling out the heavy armor.

[00:04:43] - The Showroom: Tribute to Mysterious Universe

Bill discusses one of his favorite Podcasts, and the things that made that particular show so memorable for him. Benjamin Grundy has posted a recent comment on his website www.mysteriousuniverse.org, that the show is on “Temporary Hiatus.” Bill mentions the excellent use of bumper music, tributes to listeners and listener feedback, as well as a discussion of Benjamin’s monetization model, which enabled listeners to subscribe to a members only premium segment that went into greater detail than the free content segments.
Benjamin, you will be missed!

[00:06:32] - Pit Pass: HandyCorder Review: Zoom H2 and H4

The Zoom Handy Mic H4 and H2 are remarkable devices for the podcaster, with range of differing capabilities that make them one of the best investments on the market today. Get the inside scoop on these handy digital recorders.

[00:15:39] - Synthetic Blend: Podango

Lee Gibbons (CEO) and Doug Smith (President) of Podango join us in the studio to discuss the progression of podcasting and the importance of using the various Web technologies to increase traffic. The use of social media tools such as Twitter are also important to influence the audience. Other topics included, what can we learn from traditional media, distribution of podcast media subscriptions through e-mail, and the optimization of media as a way to garner a focused audience. Lastly, what’s coming down the pipeline over the next year in the podcast space?

[00:01:05] - 0 to 60 in the News: New Media Mayhem?

Newspapers are laying off employees left and right. What has attributed to the fall of the Newspaper industry? Where does podcasting fit in? “Multimedia Journalism” is growing in popularity among photojournalists. Blogging has allowed any writer the platform and syndication that is needed to grow an audience.

[00:01:58] - Under the Hood: Press Release Primer

In this episode we introduced Necia Clark-Mantle, our Vice President of Marketing. Necia spent a few minutes discussing the use of Press Releases as a way to promote your company/podcast.
Press Releases can be a great way to increase the exposure of your podcast, and can help you quickly increase your subscriber base. Once the Press Release hits the wires, you can generally expect to reap the benefits of the publicity for a few days to several weeks. Press Releases are also great way to increase your Search Engine Optimization factor.

[00:09:16] - Pit Pass: Identity Crisis - What you should know about the face of your podcast

As podcasting becomes an increasingly more mainstream delivery mechanism the number of podcasts available to consumers will continue to multiply. With this augmentation to the already saturated market, new media producers will be competing more than ever for new subscribers. One way to stand out from the crowd is through effective podcover design. Join us this week as we discuss some basic design principles to improve your podcover and podcast graphics in general.

[00:14:32] - Synthetic Blend: The Podcast Brothers - Part II

Tim and Emile Bourquin, discuss moving the New Media Expo to Las Vegas and the increasing visibility of an emerging podcast industry. The founders share their favorite podcast shows and how do they find the new content for their own shows. Lastly, advice is given to avoid podfading – the insidious disease that can affect any show in the early stages of development.

[ 00:01:06 ] - 0 to 60 in the News: Verizon CEO - serious of sour grapes?

Verizon’s CEO makes the claim that there’s an iPhone “conspiracy” and that Apple has no business being touted as a johnny come lately market leader. Them’s fight’n words! Our take: Not only is Apple a clear market leader but they’re leaving Verizon and others in the dust when it comes to media experiences in a mobile form factor. Does this spat affect podcasters? Have your say in the forums - podcast-tuneup.com/forums

[ 00:01:33 ] - Under the Hood: Introduction to The Podgineer

The Podgineer has been designed to provide a unique listener experience through episode structure. By differentiating content through segmentation, individual topics are easily identified and consistent from episode to episode - creating a seamless experience over time. Segments include -

0 to 60 in the News: Hard hitting news item relating to the podcast industry
Under the Hood: “Spark Plug” tips and tricks reveled and explained
The Showroom: Podcast reviews that highlight the good, the bad, and the ugly of podcasting
Pit Pass: In-depth discussion on topics that affect podcast development and budding Podcast Engineers
Synthetic Blend: In-depth interviews of media professionals who have a major impact on the podcast community

Additionally, the title of each episode is specially engineered to reflect the three main content segments of the show - Under the Hood, Pit Pass, and Synthetic Blend. The episode description specifically identifies “The Showroom” podcast review and the accompanying rating. Properly formatting the title and description tags provides subscribers with quick reference to topics and relevance.

Note: The segment naming directly correlates with the Podcast Tuneup “Podgineer” public forum threads to easily identify thread focus, encourage participation and the exchange of ideas. When posting comments, please be courteous as ideas are for discussing, not tearing down!

[ 00:08:43 ] – The Showroom: Quick and Dirty Tips Network

This week we focus on [Information Design] and the use of the Lyric field in iTunes. The development team at the Quick and Dirty Tips Network receive a + rating by perfecting the art of communication with their audience. This is accomplished through the use of little used tags like “Lyrics” which can turn a mediocre experience into an informative one if properly implemented.

[ 00:09:19 ] - Pit Pass: What’s in Name? Is the term podcaster on its way out?

Are you undecided on the issue of whether or not the term “podcast” is still appropriate to define your creative profession or are you fixated on being known as a New Media Producer? In this open-ended discussion, we delve into the history of the term “New Media”, why the term “Podcast” should remain in place to define the medium, and why the “Podcast Engineer’s” time has come. We never shy away from a controversy -

[ 00:16:10 ] - Synthetic Blend: The Podcast Brothers - Part I

Tim and Emile Bourquin, the masterminds behind the New Media Expo, join the Podcast Tuneup team in Pleasant Grove Utah in the studio for a two part series on all things podcasting!
